Volkswagen Touareg Charging cable

Volkswagen Touareg Charging cable

7.2kW
The Volkswagen Touareg has a charging capacity of 7,4kW. So we recommend using a charging cable of atleast 7,4kW for optimal charging speeds.

22kW cable compatible
However, please be aware that a 22kW cable is perfectly capable of charging at 7,4kW. With a 22kW cable you'll have guaranteed optimal charging speeds in the event of a new car or a possible upgrade in charging capacity.

Collection: Volkswagen Touareg Charging cable

The Volkswagen Touareg eHybrid and Touareg R are plug-in hybrid full-size SUVs based on the third-generation Touareg (CR7), combining a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a 100 kW electric motor integrated into the 8-speed automatic gearbox, driving all four wheels through permanent 4MOTION all-wheel drive. The eHybrid produces a combined system output of 280 kW (381 hp) and 600 Nm, reaching 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. The Touareg R uses the same hardware with a sportier calibration for 340 kW (462 hp) and 700 Nm, covering 0–100 km/h in 5.1 seconds. Both share a 17.9 kWh lithium-ion battery (14.3 kWh usable) beneath the luggage compartment floor, delivering a WLTP electric range of up to 47–51 km (29–31 miles) at up to 135 km/h in all-electric mode.

The charging inlet is a Type 2 socket on the left rear flank of the vehicle, consistent across both the eHybrid and Touareg R. The onboard AC charger uses a two-phase architecture, drawing 16A on each of two phases (L1 and L2) for a combined 7.2 kW — the same design used on several other Volkswagen Group PHEVs. On a single-phase supply, only one phase is available and the charger draws 3.7 kW; a two- or three-phase supply is required to reach the full 7.2 kW. There is no DC rapid charging capability on either variant.

Charging at a wallbox

At 7.2 kW from a two- or three-phase wallbox, the Touareg eHybrid and Touareg R charge from empty to full in approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. On a single-phase wallbox, the charger draws 3.7 kW on one phase, extending a full charge to around 4 hours 15 minutes. In practice, most drivers top up from a partial state rather than starting from empty, so daily charging sessions are considerably shorter.

Which cable to use

With a 7.2 kW two-phase onboard charger, an 11 kW Voldt® Type 2 cable is the correct match for both the Touareg eHybrid and Touareg R at any wallbox or public AC charge point. It handles the full 7.2 kW charging capability and connects to every Type 2 installation built to the IEC 62196-2 standard. A 22 kW cable is equally well suited and provides forward compatibility for any future vehicle with a higher-rated onboard charger.

Getting the reach right

Voldt® Type 2 cables are available in lengths from 4 m up to 40 m. A 6 m cable suits most home wallbox installations, providing comfortable reach from a wall-mounted charger to the left rear inlet without excess cable on the ground. An 8 m or 10 m cable gives more flexibility for garages and driveways where the car cannot always park with the left rear directly adjacent to the charge point. For public charge points and workplace bays where the charger position varies, lengths from 10 m upward remove any concern about reach, and Voldt® supplies cables up to 40 m for installations where a longer run is genuinely needed.

Portable charging with a CEE charger

The Touareg's 14.3 kWh usable battery is compact enough for a full charge to be practical from industrial CEE sockets. The Voldt® portable EV charger connects via the Type 2 inlet and is available in models from 3.7 kW to 22 kW. Because the onboard charger draws 16A across two phases (L1 and L2), it reaches its full 7.2 kW rate whenever both phases are available — which is the case at both 16A and 32A three-phase CEE sockets. At either socket type, a full charge from empty takes approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. At a 16A single-phase CEE socket, only one phase is available and the car draws 3.7 kW, extending a full charge to approximately 4 hours 15 minutes. The 32A three-phase portable charger is the most versatile option, reaching the Touareg's full 7.2 kW ceiling and covering other vehicles in a mixed household or fleet at their respective charging ceilings.

Voldt® charging cables are CE, UKCA and TÜV certified and manufactured according to IATF 16949 automotive quality standards. Single-piece moulded connectors, no glue or screws. IP67-rated for operation between −30°C and +50°C. 100% copper conductors with silver-plated contacts. Tested beyond 10,000 connection cycles.
