Collection: Volkswagen Golf GTE charging cable

The Volkswagen Golf GTE is the plug-in hybrid performance variant of the Golf, spanning three generations. The Mk7 and Mk7.5 GTE (2014–2020), based on the MQB platform, paired a 1.4 TSI with an electric motor for a combined 204 hp, with a 7.0 kWh usable battery and a WLTP electric range of around 50 km (31 miles). The Mk8 GTE pre-facelift (2020–2023), moving to the MQB Evo platform, uprated the combined output to 245 hp and increased the usable battery to 10.4 kWh, extending WLTP electric range to around 60 km (37 miles) with 0–100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. The Mk8.5 GTE facelift (2024–present) introduces a 1.5 TSI evo2 with a new electric motor for 272 hp combined, a 19.7 kWh usable battery, and a WLTP electric range of up to 131 km (81 miles), reaching 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds.

The Mk7 and Mk7.5 GTE carry the charging port behind the VW badge at the front centre of the car. From the Mk8 onward, Volkswagen relocated the inlet to the front left wing, ahead of the driver's door. The Mk7/7.5 and Mk8 pre-facelift use a 3.6 kW single-phase onboard AC charger with no DC charging capability. The Mk8.5 facelift upgrades this to an 11 kW three-phase onboard AC charger and adds DC charging at up to 40 kW via a CCS2 combo inlet, enabling a 10–80% charge in approximately 25 minutes.

Charging at a wallbox

On the Mk7/7.5, the 3.6 kW charger fills the 7.0 kWh usable battery from empty in approximately 2 hours 10 minutes. On the Mk8 pre-facelift, the same 3.6 kW charger takes around 3 hours 10 minutes to fill the larger 10.4 kWh battery. On the Mk8.5 facelift, the 11 kW three-phase charger fills the 19.7 kWh battery in approximately 2 hours from a three-phase wallbox. On a single-phase supply, the Mk8.5 charger draws one phase at 3.7 kW, extending a full charge to around 5 hours 50 minutes.

Which cable to use

An 11 kW Voldt® Type 2 cable covers every generation of the Golf GTE. On the Mk7/7.5 and Mk8 pre-facelift, it handles the 3.6 kW single-phase charger without restriction. On the Mk8.5 facelift, it matches the 11 kW three-phase onboard charger exactly. A 22 kW cable covers all generations equally and provides forward compatibility for any future vehicle with a higher-rated onboard charger.

Cable length

Voldt® Type 2 cables are available in lengths from 4 m up to 40 m. On the Mk7 and Mk7.5, the front-centre port position means the car typically parks nose-first towards the wallbox. From the Mk8 onward, the port moves to the front left wing, which suits the same nose-in orientation for most home wallbox setups. A 6 m cable covers the majority of installations comfortably. An 8 m or 10 m cable adds flexibility for driveways and garages where the parking position is less consistent. For public charge points and workplace bays where the charger position varies, lengths from 10 m upward remove any concern about reach, and Voldt® supplies cables up to 40 m for installations where a longer run is genuinely needed.

Portable charging with a CEE charger

All three generations of the Golf GTE have compact enough batteries for a full charge to be achievable in practical timeframes from industrial CEE sockets. The Voldt® portable EV charger connects via the Type 2 inlet and is available in models from 3.7 kW to 22 kW. On the Mk7/7.5 and Mk8 pre-facelift, the single-phase 3.6 kW charger draws at its ceiling from any CEE socket type: a full charge takes approximately 2 hours 10 minutes on the Mk7/7.5 and around 3 hours 10 minutes on the Mk8 pre-facelift, regardless of socket phase count. On the Mk8.5 facelift, the three-phase 11 kW charger draws across all three phases at a three-phase socket, reaching its full 11 kW ceiling at both 16A and 32A three-phase CEE sockets for a full charge in approximately 2 hours. At a 16A single-phase CEE socket, the charger draws one phase at 3.7 kW, extending a full charge to approximately 5 hours 50 minutes. The 32A three-phase portable charger is the most versatile option, reaching the Mk8.5's full 11 kW ceiling and covering the earlier generations at their respective rates.
