The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ is a plug-in hybrid performance SUV, sold as the V167 SUV and the C167 Coupé. A 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six producing 449 PS works alongside an electric motor mounted between the engine and the nine-speed AMG Speedshift TCT gearbox, the first P2 hybrid layout AMG has built. Cars from 2024 pair it with a 100 kW motor for a combined 544 PS, and cars from the March 2026 update use a 135 kW motor for 585 PS. System torque is 750 Nm either way, 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.7 or 4.5 seconds respectively, and both are limited to 250 km/h. The 31.2 kWh battery holds roughly 25 kWh usable, the Type 2 socket sits on the left rear, and the onboard charger accepts 11 kW across three phases or 7.4 kW on a single phase.

An AMG that will do the commute on electricity

Most performance hybrids carry a small battery tuned for power delivery rather than range. This one does the opposite. The WLTP electric figure runs from 80 to 86 km on the 544 PS SUV and 82 to 87 km on the Coupé, rising to 88 to 91 km and 90 to 93 km on the 585 PS cars, and the GLE will hold 140 km/h on electricity alone. For most drivers that covers the working week without the six-cylinder starting, which is an unusual thing to be able to say about a car with 750 Nm.

The P2 layout is why it works so cleanly. With the motor sitting between the engine and the gearbox, its output runs through the same nine speeds and the same AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive as the petrol engine, so electric running feels like the car being quiet rather than the car being held back. A full charge takes around two hours 45 minutes at 11 kW and around four hours at 7.4 kW, both measured from 10 to 100 per cent. Cars fitted with the optional 60 kW DC charger will also take 10 to 80 per cent in about 20 minutes, using the charge point's own tethered lead, which has no bearing on the cable you buy.

Choosing a cable for a single-phase home

British homes are supplied on a single phase, and a typical wallbox delivers 7.4 kW at 32A. This particular Mercedes charger will take all of it: unlike many 11 kW three-phase units, it accepts 32A on a single line rather than dropping to 16A. Reaching that rate needs a cable rated to carry 32A per conductor, which is why we recommend our 22 kW Type 2 cable for UK owners. It gives you the full 7.4 kW at home and the full 11 kW at any three-phase public post, so one cable covers both without compromise. A 16A-per-conductor cable would hold a single-phase session to around 3.7 kW, which doubles the time at home.

An 11 kW cable remains a sensible choice if your charging is mostly done on three-phase posts at work or in town, where it reaches the same 11 kW in a lighter cable that coils away more easily. On length, the socket sits on the left rear, so reversing towards the wallbox will usually shorten the run. Six metres suits most home installations on that basis, eight metres is the more relaxed choice for public bays where you cannot control which way round you park, and 10 and 15-metre cables cover shared driveways, hotel car parks and multi-storey layouts.

Red, blue and three-pin: what each socket gives this car

Away from a fixed wallbox, the socket in front of you makes a real difference to this car, more so than on a small-battery hybrid. Our 11 kW portable charger plugs into a 16A red commando socket and delivers the car's full 11 kW, filling the battery in around two hours 45 minutes. That is the same rate as a three-phase public post, from a socket you will find in workplace car parks, workshops, trade units and on farms. For campsites, marina berths and caravan pitches, the blue 16A commando charger runs at 3.7 kW and puts the full 25 kWh back in around seven and a half hours, which an overnight pitch covers comfortably.

Where the only supply is a household socket, the three-pin portable charger is adjustable from 8A to 13A and draws up to 2.8 kW, within the limits of what the circuit can sustain. On a battery this size a full charge takes around ten hours, which makes it the right tool for a night at a hotel or a holiday let where you are parked until morning anyway. A built-in thermal sensor watches the temperature at the plug and eases the current back automatically if the socket runs warm, which is the safeguard that earns its keep on wiring you have never seen behind the faceplate.
