The Mercedes-Benz GLA 250e is Mercedes' compact plug-in hybrid SUV, pairing a 1.33-litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor for 218 hp combined output through an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox and front-wheel drive. Two generations are on UK roads: pre-facelift cars from 2020 to mid-2023 use a roughly 10.6 kWh usable battery and cap AC charging at 7.4 kW single-phase, while the 2023 facelift onwards ships with 11.5 kWh usable, an 11 kW three-phase onboard charger and, unusually for the segment, DC rapid charging at up to 22 kW. The Type 2 socket sits on the right rear quarter, at fuel-door height.

The right cable for a compact PHEV in a single-phase country

For a small-battery PHEV, the wrong cable eats a disproportionate share of the daily routine. UK homes and most workplace installations run on single-phase 230 V, typically 32 amperes on a fitted wallbox, which delivers 7.4 kW real-world. A Voldt® Type 2 cable rated at 22 kW is the correct match regardless of which generation of GLA 250e you drive. Its conductors are rated at 32 amperes per phase, so on a single-phase 32 A wallbox it delivers the full 7.4 kW to the car: a pre-facelift reaches a full charge in around one and a half hours, a facelift in around one and three-quarter hours. On a public three-phase 11 kW post, the same 22 kW cable draws the facelift's full 11 kW three-phase and fills the battery in roughly one hour 15 minutes. Fit an 11 kW cable instead and the picture changes for the worse: its 16-amp-per-phase conductors become the bottleneck on a UK single-phase wallbox, throttling the session to 3.7 kW and stretching a full charge to around three hours on either generation.

Length matters more on this car than on a large PHEV. The port sits on the right rear quarter, so pulling the right flank of the car towards the post is the natural approach; on a home driveway that dictates orientation, and on public bays it decides whether you park nose-in or reverse-in. The Voldt® Type 2 range is available in 6, 8, 10 and 15 metres. Six metres suffices for a driveway or garage with the wallbox mounted just behind the parked car. Eight and ten metres cover most workplace and supermarket bays. Fifteen metres gives the headroom needed at hotel car parks and older motorway service areas where the post is often awkwardly placed relative to the marked bay.

Portable charging for weekends, cottages and unfamiliar ground

On a red 32 A CEE socket in a workshop, farm outbuilding or holiday let with an industrial connection, a pre-facelift GLA 250e draws its full 7.4 kW from one leg of the three-phase supply, and a facelift car takes its full 11 kW three-phase. Both cases put a full battery on the clock in under two hours. It is the one portable that suits both generations without compromise.

For campsites, marinas and rural cottages equipped with the blue 16 A CEE socket, the Voldt® portable cable with blue Commando plug provides 3.7 kW single-phase and fills the battery in around three hours regardless of generation, perfectly compatible with an evening plug-in on a night away in the Cotswolds or on the Cornish coast. When no CEE socket is available, the Voldt® three-pin granny charger draws up to 2.8 kW within the limits of what the domestic ring main can sustain, adjustable in one-amp steps between 8 and 13 amperes so the load can be reduced if the circuit is shared with the kettle or the tumble dryer. A full charge takes around four to five hours, entirely reasonable overnight. A built-in thermal sensor monitors the plug temperature throughout the session and automatically reduces the current if the connection begins to warm, a real practical safeguard on older domestic wiring.
