The Mercedes-Benz EQT is Mercedes' fully electric compact MPV, on sale since May 2023 and built on the Renault Kangoo E-Tech platform at Renault's Maubeuge plant in northern France. Two body lengths are on UK roads: the Standard (4,498 mm long, up to five seats) and the Long-wheelbase (added mid-2024, wheelbase extended by 380 mm, up to seven seats with the optional third row). Both share a single 90 kW (122 hp) front-mounted electric motor, front-wheel drive, and a 45 kWh usable lithium-ion battery, delivering approximately 175 miles of WLTP range on the Standard and around 165 miles on the Long. AC charging is 11 kW three-phase as standard, with optional upgrades to 22 kW three-phase AC and 80 kW DC rapid charging via CCS. The charging port sits at the very front of the vehicle, behind a flap beneath the three-pointed star.

The right cable for either AC configuration

The EQT ships in two AC configurations, and one Voldt® cable rating serves both without compromise. A UK home installation typically supplies single-phase 230 V at 32 amperes on a fitted wallbox, delivering 7.4 kW real-world. On this kind of connection the Voldt® Type 2 cable rated at 22 kW is the correct choice, because its 32-ampere-per-phase conductors carry the full 7.4 kW the wallbox delivers, filling a 45 kWh battery in around seven hours, easily managed overnight. An 11 kW cable, with 16-ampere-per-phase conductors, becomes the bottleneck on the same wallbox and throttles the session to 3.7 kW, stretching a full charge to around thirteen hours: workable, but no longer a single-night affair. At a public three-phase 11 kW post the 22 kW cable delivers the standard EQT's full 11 kW and completes a charge in around four and a half hours. Owners who specified the 22 kW AC option benefit twice, because at a 22 kW three-phase destination post only the 22 kW cable unlocks the full rate and a full charge in around two and a half hours; an 11 kW cable would cap the same session at 11 kW, halving the available speed.

Cable length matters more on this car than on most EVs, because the port sits at the very front under the badge. Pulling nose-in to a post is the natural approach, which suits an MPV of this size in the tight city bays where it spends much of its life. The Voldt® Type 2 range is available in 6, 8, 10 and 15 metres. Six metres suffices for a driveway or garage with the wallbox mounted just in front of the parked car. Eight and ten metres handle office car parks, supermarket bays and most workplace installations. Fifteen metres reaches the awkwardly placed posts at hotel car parks, older motorway service areas and pub car parks where the layout was never planned around cable routing.

Portable charging for family weekends, campsites and site work

On a red 32 A CEE socket in a workshop, farm outbuilding or holiday let with an industrial connection, the standard 11 kW EQT draws its full 11 kW three-phase for a full charge in around four and a half hours, and a 22 kW-optioned EQT takes its full 22 kW and completes in around two and a half hours. It is the one portable that serves both configurations without compromise, and a natural fit for tradespeople and small businesses running an EQT as a delivery or service vehicle who occasionally need charging away from a fixed installation.

For campsites, marinas and rural cottages equipped with the blue 16 A CEE socket, the Voldt® portable cable with blue Commando plug delivers 3.7 kW single-phase. On a 45 kWh battery this is a stay-over rate rather than a top-up rate, adding around 180 km of range through a full night's charging, which turns a Friday-to-Sunday cottage stay into a departure with a full battery for the drive home. When no CEE socket is available, the Voldt® three-pin granny charger draws up to 2.8 kW within the limits of what the domestic ring main can sustain, adjustable in one-amp steps between 8 and 13 amperes so the load can be dialled down if the circuit is shared with the kettle or the tumble dryer. Genuinely useful during a two-night stay at a holiday cottage or B&B where you plug in on arrival and let the car top up progressively while you enjoy the rest of the trip. A built-in thermal sensor monitors the plug temperature throughout the session and automatically reduces the current if the connection begins to warm, a real practical safeguard on older domestic wiring.
