The Mercedes-Benz CLE 300e is the plug-in hybrid variant of the CLE-Class, available exclusively as a two-door coupé (C236, no cabriolet). It pairs a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a 95 kW permanently excited synchronous motor integrated into the 9-speed automatic transmission for a combined 313 hp and 550 Nm at the rear wheels. The 19.5 kWh usable lithium-ion NMC battery sits beneath the luggage compartment floor, delivering a WLTP electric range of up to 111 km (69 miles) and a 0–100 km/h time of 6.3 seconds. AC charging runs through an 11 kW three-phase onboard charger via a Type 2 socket on the left rear flank, so reversing the car towards a wallbox is the natural approach at home.

Matching a Type 2 cable to the CLE 300e in the UK

UK home charging is predominantly single-phase, and the most common home wallbox installation is 7.4 kW at 32A. The CLE 300e's onboard charger accepts whatever supply reaches it, which means the cable determines how fast the car actually charges. On a single-phase 32A wallbox, a 22 kW-rated Type 2 cable carries the full 32A through its conductors and delivers 7.4 kW to the car. An 11 kW-rated cable is wired for 16A maximum per phase, so on a single-phase supply it caps the flow at 3.7 kW. Across the CLE 300e's 19.5 kWh usable battery, that translates to a full charge in approximately 3 hours at 7.4 kW compared with around 6 hours at 3.7 kW. Both remain viable overnight, but the 3-hour session at 7.4 kW keeps the car fully charged well within any evening at home, which matters for drivers who plug in after work and want a full battery for the next morning.

At three-phase public infrastructure (11 or 22 kW posts), the CLE 300e reaches its own 11 kW ceiling and completes a full charge from empty in approximately 2 hours. Both cable ratings deliver that ceiling identically on any three-phase supply, so the 22 kW cable ends up as the universal choice: it unlocks the full single-phase rate at home, delivers the full three-phase ceiling in public, and future-proofs against any next car with a higher onboard AC rating. Portable charging for the CLE 300e

For weekends away, second addresses and any location outside the fixed charging network, a portable charger keeps the electric side of the CLE 300e usable wherever a working socket is available.
