The Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance is the F1-inspired flagship plug-in hybrid of the C-Class range, available as a W206 Saloon and an S206 Estate. A handcrafted 2.0-litre M139 turbocharged four-cylinder, the most powerful production four-cylinder in the world at 350 kW (476 PS), sits at the front, with a 150 kW electric motor mounted on the rear axle. Combined output is 500 kW (680 PS) and 1020 Nm, driving all four wheels through AMG Performance 4MATIC+ and a nine-speed AMG SpeedShift MCT transmission. 0 to 100 km/h arrives in 3.4 seconds, top speed is 280 km/h (Saloon) or 270 km/h (Estate). The 400V high-performance battery holds 6.1 kWh gross (4.8 kWh usable) and delivers a WLTP electric range of approximately 13 km. The onboard AC charger is 3.7 kW single-phase, there is no DC rapid charging option, and the Type 2 port sits on the left rear flank of the vehicle.

Cable choice for the C 63 S

The C 63 S E Performance is not a commuter plug-in hybrid. Its 6.1 kWh battery is designed for repeated hard draw during dynamic driving, not for extended electric-only range, and it recharges substantially through regenerative braking under braking loads of up to 100 kW. External charging tops the battery up between drives rather than powering long silent journeys, and Mercedes designed the onboard charger to suit that use: 3.7 kW single-phase, and no DC option. Full charge from empty takes approximately one hour thirty minutes, whether the source is a home wallbox, a public AC post, or a household socket.

An 11 kW Voldt® Type 2 cable is the right match for the car everywhere in the UK. Its 16A-per-phase conductors align precisely with the car's own single-phase ceiling of 16A, so the full 3.7 kW flows without restriction on any wallbox, whether that's a 7.4 kW UK home unit or a 22 kW three-phase public post. A 22 kW cable is fully compatible too and worth considering only if a future vehicle with a higher AC charging rate is on the horizon.

The port is integrated into the left rear flank on both the Saloon and the Estate. Reversing to the wallbox at home is the natural approach and keeps the cable short. For UK street parking against the kerb, the left-rear position aligns with pavement-side charge posts without needing to route the cable across the car. A 6-metre cable handles most driveway and garage installations. An 8-metre cable adds reach for public bays where the post is offset or awkwardly placed. 10 and 15-metre options cover longer runs to detached garages, workplace charging, or shared parking with mixed bay orientations.

Charging beyond the wallbox

Since the C 63 S E Performance's onboard charger caps at 3.7 kW single-phase, socket type has no bearing on charge time: any 3.7 kW-capable source delivers a full charge in around one hour thirty minutes, and a UK three-pin socket in about two hours. What varies isn't speed, but which outlet happens to be available where you park.

At a red 16A three-phase CEE outlet, common at workshops, agricultural buildings, marinas, and some older commercial premises, the Voldt® 11 kW portable charger plugs in and delivers 3.7 kW to the car (drawing from one phase of the three available), completing a full charge in around one hour thirty minutes. It's the option to keep in the boot if you regularly move between locations where red CEE is what you'll find.

At a blue 16A single-phase CEE socket, the standard fitting on UK caravan sites and campsite hookup pillars, the Voldt® blue CEE portable delivers 3.7 kW and finishes a full charge in the same one hour thirty minutes. A single stop at a holiday park is enough to top up completely.

At a standard UK three-pin outlet, the Voldt® three-pin granny charger draws up to 2.8 kW within the limits of your ring main and socket condition, delivering a full charge in around two hours. A built-in thermal sensor monitors the connection temperature and reduces current automatically if the plug or socket begins to warm. For a battery of this size, the household wall socket is a fully practical everyday charging method: no wallbox required.
