The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance pairs a handcrafted 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 at the front with a permanently excited synchronous electric motor at the rear, in the P3 hybrid layout AMG developed out of its Formula 1 programme. In the four-door X290, the combination produces 843 PS (831 bhp) and up to 1,470 Nm, 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and a limited 316 km/h. The same name belongs to the second-generation two-door C192 introduced in 2024, rated at 816 PS and up to 1,420 Nm. Both cars charge in precisely the same way: a 6.1 kWh AMG high-performance battery with 4.8 kWh usable, a 3.7 kW single-phase onboard charger, no DC capability, and a Type 2 socket behind a flap in the rear bumper. Everything below applies equally to either.

A small battery doing a very specific job

The AMG high-performance battery holds 1,200 cylindrical cells, each surrounded by a non-conductive coolant that draws heat away individually rather than from the pack as a whole. That architecture is built for power density: 70 kW continuously and 150 kW in ten-second bursts, fed to the rear axle through the motor's own two-speed gearbox. Range was never the target. The WLTP electric figure is 12 km at up to 130 km/h, and the 3.7 kW onboard charger is sized in proportion to a 4.8 kWh battery rather than in proportion to the car's price.

In everyday use the car does most of its own charging. Recuperation runs to four levels, with level three giving one-pedal driving and more than 100 kW flowing back into the battery under heavy braking, while RACE mode holds recuperation at level one so the car behaves predictably at the limit. The result is that plugging in from a genuinely empty battery is the exception rather than the routine. When you do, a full charge at 3.7 kW takes around one and a half hours, whether that comes from a wallbox, a public AC post or a socket in a garage.

The cable that matches the car

British homes are supplied on a single phase, and a typical domestic wallbox delivers 7.4 kW at 32A. The GT 63 S E Performance will not use all of it. The onboard charger draws 16A on one phase, which is 3.7 kW, and that ceiling holds whatever the supply offers. Our 11 kW Type 2 cable carries 16A per conductor, which is exactly what the car asks for, and it delivers the full 3.7 kW at home, at a public post and at a three-phase charger alike. It is also the lighter of the two cables and the easier one to coil back into a boot that is already carrying a rear-mounted battery.

A 22 kW Type 2 cable is worth considering if the AMG shares a garage with something else. Rated at 32A per conductor, it gives a 7.4 kW single-phase car its full rate from a domestic wallbox and reaches 11 or 22 kW at three-phase public posts, while charging the GT 63 S at its usual 3.7 kW. One cable, two vehicles, no swapping. On length, the rear bumper port means reversing into a bay puts the socket almost against the post, so 6 metres is ample at home. An 8-metre cable is the sensible choice for public bays and hotel car parks, and 10 and 15-metre lengths cover shared driveways, event parking and multi-storey layouts where the nearest post is not the one beside you.

Sockets at the track, the hotel and the house

Because the onboard charger draws from one phase at 16A, every socket type gives this car the same 3.7 kW. That makes portable charging refreshingly simple: the only question is which socket happens to be in front of you. Our 11 kW portable charger plugs into a 16A red commando socket, which is the connection you find in paddocks, workshops, event compounds and trade units, and it fills the battery in around one and a half hours. Where the supply is a campsite bollard, a marina berth or a caravan pitch, the blue 16A commando charger does the same job at the same rate.

For hotels, holiday houses and the everyday case of a car parked at home, the three-pin portable charger is adjustable from 8A to 13A and draws up to 2.8 kW, within the limits of what the circuit can sustain. On a 4.8 kWh battery that is a full charge in roughly two hours, which comfortably fits an evening or a long lunch. A built-in thermal sensor watches the temperature at the plug and eases the current back automatically if the socket runs warm, which is the sensible safeguard on unfamiliar wiring in a hotel garage or a rented paddock unit.
