BMW X5 xDrive charging cable

3.7kW
The BMW X5 xDrive has a charging capacity of 3,7kW. So we recommend using a charging cable of atleast 3,7kW for optimal charging speeds.

22kW cable compatible
However, please be aware that a 22kW cable is perfectly capable of charging at 3,7kW. With a 22kW cable you'll have guaranteed optimal charging speeds in the event of a new car or a possible upgrade in charging capacity.

Collection: BMW X5 xDrive charging cable

The BMW X5 has been available with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain since 2015, and over three generations the powertrain has grown substantially more capable. All variants use a Type 2 connector on the left front flank, consistent with BMW's broader PHEV lineup, and none support DC rapid charging. The xDrive40e (2015–2018) was built on the F15 platform with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine paired with a 9.0 kWh gross battery offering around 19 miles of electric-only range, and a 3.7 kW single-phase onboard AC charger. The xDrive45e (2019–2023) marked a generational step: the G05 platform brought a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, a 24 kWh gross battery with 21.6 kWh usable, a WLTP electric range of up to 54 miles, and the same 3.7 kW single-phase charger. The 2024 xDrive50e brought the most significant overhaul yet. Battery capacity grew by 25% to 29.5 kWh gross with 25.7 kWh usable, extending WLTP electric range to up to 68 miles. Combined output rose to 483 hp. The onboard AC charger was upgraded to 11 kW three-phase, cutting full charge time to around two and a half hours on a compatible three-phase supply, a meaningful improvement in daily usability.

Choosing the right charging cable for your BMW X5

All X5 PHEV variants use a Type 2 connector, so a Voldt® Type 2 charging cable is the correct choice across every generation. The right rating depends on which battery your car has.

For xDrive40e and xDrive45e owners, the onboard charger is limited to 3.7 kW single-phase, so a 3.7 kW cable is the direct match. A 7.4 kW cable is a sensible upgrade: it works identically at 3.7 kW on these cars and remains far more versatile for any future vehicle. A 22 kW cable adds further future-proofing and is worth choosing if you anticipate moving to a newer PHEV or any fully electric vehicle in the future.

For xDrive50e owners, a Voldt® 11 kW cable is the correct match for the three-phase onboard charger, making full use of it on any three-phase wallbox or public post. A 22 kW cable works equally well at 11 kW and is the most versatile option to keep for future vehicle compatibility.

The left-front port position means pulling forward into a bay puts the port closest to the post in most public charging layouts. The X5 is a large vehicle, and the PHEV battery charges quickly enough relative to its size that cable reach is a smaller concern than on a full EV. That said, a generous cable length removes small daily frustrations in layouts where the post is not perfectly placed. A 6-metre cable covers most home setups comfortably. An 8-metre cable is the more practical all-round choice, handling most public post positions without needing to reposition a car of this size, and worth defaulting to for most X5 owners.

Portable charging for the BMW X5

The Voldt® portable CEE charging cable is available in models up to 22 kW via three-phase CEE. For xDrive40e owners, a 16A single-phase CEE socket delivers 3.7 kW, filling the 6.8 kWh usable battery in under two hours: a relaxed stop at any campsite or marina with a socket available. For xDrive45e owners, the same 16A single-phase CEE socket delivers 3.7 kW, filling the 21.6 kWh battery in approximately six hours. For xDrive50e owners, a 32A three-phase red CEE socket delivers the full 11 kW, filling the 25.7 kWh battery in around two and a half hours. Campsites and marinas across Europe typically provide blue single-phase 16A CEE sockets, which cap out at 3.7 kW: workable for all three generations overnight given the relatively modest battery sizes involved. Where only a standard household socket is available, the Schuko portable charger delivers a safe 2.3 kW. For all X5 PHEV variants this is a genuinely useful option overnight: the xDrive40e fills in under four hours, the xDrive45e in around ten hours, and the xDrive50e in around twelve.
