BMW M5 PHEV Charging cable

BMW M5 PHEV Charging cable

7,4kW
The BMW M5 PHEV has a charging capacity of 7,4kW. So we recommend using a charging cable of atleast 7,4kW for optimal charging speeds.

22kW cable compatible
However, please be aware that a 22kW cable is perfectly capable of charging at 7,4kW. With a 22kW cable you'll have guaranteed optimal charging speeds in the event of a new car or a possible upgrade in charging capacity.

Collection: BMW M5 PHEV Charging cable

The BMW M5 G90 represents a fundamental shift in what the M5 nameplate means. For the first time in the model's history, the G90 generation pairs BMW's 4.4-litre twin-turbo S68 V8 with a full plug-in hybrid system drawn from the XM's electrified architecture. The combustion engine contributes 430 kW, while a 145 kW electric motor integrated into the eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox delivers a combined system output of 535 kW and 1,000 Nm of torque, channelled through M xDrive all-wheel drive. The sedan reaches 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds; the Touring estate in 3.6 seconds. In pure electric mode, both variants are limited to 140 km/h and cover up to 69 km (sedan) and 67 km (Touring) on the WLTP cycle, drawing on 18.6 kWh of usable battery capacity from a 22.1 kWh gross pack. No DC rapid charging is available, consistent with BMW's broader PHEV range. The Type 2 charging port sits on the left front flank.

Charging the M5 at home and on the road

The onboard AC charger launched at 7.4 kW on early cars but was upgraded to 11 kW three-phase during the production run, and all M5s currently on sale in Europe carry the higher rate. At 11 kW from a compatible three-phase wallbox, a full charge from near-empty takes approximately two hours, a short session for a battery this size. The 11 kW charger operates at 16A across three phases, and that architecture has a practical implication worth noting: a single-phase cable, regardless of its rated current, can only present one phase to the car. The onboard charger cannot activate the remaining two phases, so charging is capped at 16A on that single line, which equates to 3.7 kW. At that rate, a full charge takes around five and a half hours rather than two. For home charging, a three-phase wallbox is the correct installation if you want to take full advantage of the M5's 11 kW capability.

Which cable the M5 needs

The M5 uses a Type 2 connector, so a Voldt® Type 2 charging cable is the correct choice for both sedan and Touring. The onboard charger is an 11 kW three-phase unit, and a Voldt® 11 kW cable matches it precisely, delivering a full charge in approximately two hours at a compatible wallbox. A 22 kW cable is a sensible upgrade choice if your next vehicle supports higher-rate AC charging: the M5 will accept only up to 11 kW, but the cable will be ready for a car that can use more. Fitting a single-phase cable rated below 11 kW will restrict the session to 3.7 kW, as explained above, and extends the charge time considerably.

The left-front port position aligns naturally with forward-entry bay layouts, placing the socket adjacent to the charging post in most public configurations. The M5 is a long car in both body styles, and a 6-metre cable handles the large majority of home installations without difficulty. An 8-metre cable adds useful reach for public posts positioned further back in the bay, or for wider spaces where the port side ends up at greater distance from the pillar, and is the more practical default if you charge regularly in varied locations.

Portable charging for the BMW M5

The Voldt® portable CEE charging cable connects to industrial CEE sockets and covers a range of charge rates depending on the supply available. On a 16A three-phase CEE socket (11 kW), the M5's full 18.6 kWh battery fills in approximately two hours, the same as a dedicated wallbox. On a 32A three-phase CEE socket (22 kW), output is capped at the car's 11 kW onboard charger ceiling, so the result is identical. On a 16A single-phase CEE socket (3.7 kW), a full charge takes around five and a half hours. Red three-phase CEE sockets are found at industrial sites, workshops, and some marinas. Standard European campsite hookup points provide blue single-phase 16A sockets, which will charge the M5 at 3.7 kW: adequate for an overnight stop, but considerably slower than a three-phase supply.
