The Mercedes-Benz GLE 350de 4MATIC is a large luxury plug-in hybrid SUV pairing a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine with a 100 kW electric motor for a combined 320 PS and 700 Nm of torque, driving all four wheels through a 9-speed automatic. WLTP electric range reaches up to 100 km (roughly 60 miles), one of the longest in the PHEV class, which lets most daily driving happen on battery while the diesel takes over on longer touring routes. Two generations sit under the same badge: the pre-facelift V167 (2019–2022) uses a two-phase 7.4 kW onboard AC charger, while the facelifted V167 from 2023 onwards moved to a three-phase 11 kW onboard AC charger. Both share the same 31.2 kWh battery pack and the same charging port position on the left rear quarter, so reversing the car towards a wallbox suits both generations equally.

The Type 2 cable to pair with the GLE 350de in the UK

UK home charging is predominantly single-phase, with the most common installation delivering 7.4 kW at 32A. On a single-phase 32A wallbox, a 22 kW-rated Type 2 cable carries the full 32A through its conductors, delivering 7.4 kW to the car. An 11 kW-rated cable is wired for 16A per phase maximum, so on a single-phase supply it caps the flow at 3.7 kW. For facelifted GLE 350de owners, this is the whole story: the 22 kW cable unlocks a full charge in approximately 3 hours 30 minutes at 7.4 kW, compared with around 7 hours 30 minutes on a 3.7 kW rate. For pre-facelift GLE 350de owners, the picture is different: the two-phase 7.4 kW onboard charger draws 16A from two phases simultaneously to reach its ceiling, which a UK single-phase supply cannot provide. On single-phase infrastructure, the pre-facelift car settles at 3.7 kW regardless of which cable is fitted, and reaches its full 7.4 kW only where a two- or three-phase supply is available.

At three-phase public infrastructure (11 or 22 kW posts), the picture is cleaner. Facelifted cars reach their 11 kW ceiling and complete a full charge from empty in approximately 2 hours 45 minutes. Pre-facelift cars settle at 7.4 kW two-phase in approximately 4 hours. Both cable ratings deliver these results identically on any three-phase supply, so the 22 kW cable ends up as the universal choice across the range in the UK: it delivers the full ceiling on both generations at every public post, unlocks the full 7.4 kW single-phase rate for facelifted cars at home, and future-proofs against any next vehicle carrying a higher onboard AC rating. With the port on the left rear quarter, reversing towards a wallbox keeps the cable run short, and 6 metres suits most driveways and garages. Eight metres handles public bays where the post isn't always aligned with the rear corner, and 10 or 15 metres covers hotels, workplaces and second addresses where the car can't always park directly beside the charge point. Portable charging away from the wallbox

For weekends away, second addresses, holiday cottages and any location outside the fixed charging network, a portable charger keeps the electric side of the GLE 350de usable wherever a working socket is available. The Voldt® 11 kW three-phase red CEE portable charger plugs into an industrial red CEE three-phase socket, common at workshops, farms, holiday cottages with agricultural supplies and commercial premises. On facelifted cars it delivers the full 11 kW onboard ceiling and completes a full charge from empty in approximately 2 hours 45 minutes. On pre-facelift cars, the same portable supplies both phases the two-phase charger needs and delivers 7.4 kW for a full charge in approximately 4 hours. On any address with red CEE infrastructure, it functions as a mobile wallbox for either generation.

The Voldt® 3.7 kW blue CEE portable charger uses the 16A single-phase blue commando socket found at caravan sites, marinas and outdoor commercial premises, and completes a full charge from empty in approximately 7 hours 30 minutes on both generations: a comfortable overnight refill during any stopover, without touching the public charging network. The Voldt® three-pin domestic charger plugs into a standard UK 13A socket and delivers up to 2.8 kW, within the limits of what the household wiring can sustain, completing a full charge from empty in approximately 9 hours 30 minutes. A built-in thermal sensor monitors the connection temperature during charging and automatically reduces the current if the plug or socket warms beyond a safe level, which makes the three-pin charger a confident overnight option at family addresses, country hotels or any location without a dedicated wallbox.
