Collection: Kia Sorento PHEV charging cable

The Kia Sorento PHEV is a seven-seat SUV combining a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined 265 PS and standard all-wheel drive. The 13.8 kWh battery delivers up to 35 miles of pure-electric range, enough to cover most daily commutes and local errands without the petrol engine starting. The onboard charger draws a maximum of 3.3 kW from any AC source, meaning a full charge from empty takes around four hours on a wallbox and around six hours from a domestic socket. There is no DC fast charging. The Type 2 charge port sits on the right rear flank.

Why daily charging matters on a family SUV

The Sorento PHEV's 35-mile electric range comfortably covers the school run, the weekly shop, and a typical commute. Owners who plug in every evening and drive on electricity for short trips see a significant drop in fuel costs, particularly in urban and suburban driving where the electric motor does most of the work. Those who treat the Sorento as a conventional car and rarely charge are carrying 13.8 kWh of battery weight for no benefit. With a full charge taking around four hours on a wallbox, or six from a domestic socket, the routine is straightforward: plug in when you park, unplug when you leave.

Choosing a charging cable

The Sorento's 3.3 kW onboard charger is the limiting factor on charge speed, not the cable or the power source. A Voldt® Type 2 charging cable of any power rating delivers the car's full 3.3 kW without restriction. A 22 kW cable is nonetheless the practical choice: it works identically on this car and carries its full capacity forward to a future vehicle. Many Sorento PHEV owners move to a larger-battery PHEV or a full BEV within a few years, and a 22 kW cable bridges that transition without a second purchase.

The right-rear port means reversing into a bay brings it closest to the charging post. The Sorento is a large vehicle, so post positioning matters more than on a compact car. A 6-metre cable covers a well-positioned home wallbox. An 8-metre cable is the practical standard for mixed home and public use. A 10-metre cable is worth considering given the car's length and the variability of public post placement. A 15-metre cable removes all uncertainty at hotel car parks and longer driveways.

Portable charging on the move

The Voldt® portable CEE charging cable is well matched to the Sorento PHEV. A blue single-phase 16A CEE socket delivers 3.7 kW, which exceeds the car's 3.3 kW charger, so the car charges at its full rate: a complete charge in around four hours. Red three-phase CEE sockets deliver the same 3.3 kW, as the onboard charger is single-phase only.

The Voldt® Schuko/Type G compatible portable charger draws 2.3 kW (10A safe limit) from a standard domestic wall socket, completing a full charge in around six hours. For a 13.8 kWh battery, that is a practical overnight option: plug in after dinner and the car is ready by morning.
