Software update temporarily fixes Audi charging issue
When a software update "fixes" your Audi's charging problem (and then it comes back)
This is one of the most common stories in Audi EV forums. The car has been refusing to charge reliably for weeks. The dealer applies a software update, or one rolls out over the air, and suddenly everything works. You're relieved. Then, two weeks or two months later, the same symptom returns: the same slow ramp, the same dropped sessions, the same vague fault.
It's tempting to conclude the update was useless, or that Audi is hiding something. The reality is more boring and more important: a software update can mask a hardware-leaning issue for a while, but it can't permanently fix one.
Why updates feel like a fix
Most Audi charging firmware updates tweak one of three things:
- Charging strategy. How aggressively the car ramps current, how it negotiates with the station (the ISO 15118 or older DIN SPEC handshake), and how it responds to noise on the control pilot signal.
- Tolerance windows. What voltage, frequency, or ground-fault values the on-board charger will accept before aborting.
- Diagnostic logic. Whether a borderline reading triggers a hard fault or a soft retry.
Widening tolerances or softening the diagnostic logic genuinely does make some sessions complete that would otherwise have failed. But if the underlying cause is physical (a tired CCS port module, a degraded HV contactor, a slightly out-of-spec on-board charger, or, on MEB-platform cars like the Q4 e-tron, a marginal earth at the home wallbox), the symptom will return as the hardware drifts further or the conditions shift.
What to do when the symptom comes back
- Log everything from the start. Date, time, location, charger model, AC or DC, kW requested vs delivered, battery state of charge, ambient temperature, error message text or code if shown. A short note in your phone is enough.
- Test on a different supply. If the symptom returns on your home wallbox, try a public AC point and a different DC charger. If it's universal, it's almost certainly the car. If it only happens at home, suspect the installation.
- Rule out the cable. A worn AC cable will produce intermittent failures that look exactly like a firmware regression. A Voldt® Audi-compatible Type 2 charging cable used as a known-good reference removes that variable in seconds.
- Ask the dealer for the underlying fault, not just the update. Phrase it as "the update masked the symptom for X weeks and it's back, please diagnose the hardware, not just push another firmware."
What's actually wearing
The two hardware components most often behind "comes back after every update" cases are:
- The CCS Combo 2 inlet assembly. Pins, locking pin, temperature sensors, and the small communication PCB all live in a part that gets plugged and unplugged thousands of times.
- The on-board charger (OBC). Audi OBCs are sensitive to grid quality and earthing. A unit that's borderline will pass a workshop test on a clean 22 kW dealer wallbox and then fail on your home supply a day later.
Bottom line
If an update made the problem go away and then it returned, the update wasn't wrong, it was temporary. Document the recurrence carefully and push for a hardware diagnosis rather than another firmware pass.
